World Building Tips

World Building Time! When it comes to writing, your story is in your hands, whether you are writing fantasy, horror or even romance(Fantasy writers this is huge for your story!!).

Breakdown the basics of the story. What does your character do? Where does the story take place? How does it look? Why is it the way it is?

-It’s important to note these things and focus on it before writing an outline incase it’s mentioned several times in the course of the story. If you explain that the tree you sit under is to the left of the backyard in the beginning of the book and you full circle to the end and now it’s on the right? Readers pick up on the innocent mistake. Find a vision or inspiration for the backyard! Make a board in pinterest!!

-What is the plot of the story? Is the characters planning to over throw the government? Okay, what type of government is it? Is it a monarch? dictatorship? democracy? It all makes a big impact on how the story is told.

-Describe your setting. Is it a ghost town that’s always gloomy or is it a sunny day everyday?

-For your characters, there’s a whole outline you could do that I have posted a few months ago! If you are a fantasy writer and you have mythical characters, what is their purpose? what’s the name of the creature?

🖤CREATE A BOARD! Whether it’s physical or something digital, it’s always a good thing to reference while writing! I use pinterest and have separate sections for different scenes and characters. Sometimes all you need is a muse and it makes a world of difference!!

This is only a rough sketch for world building, but every detail going into your story is crucial to putting your story together. It’s like painting a picture or making a puzzle. It’s okay not to get it the first try, but that’s why we edit and keep treading through the waters. If you have any tips, feel free to share!
