but is dating your first love and your highschool sweetheart really the rainbow and unicorns it seems to be?

i think the hardest thing we face together as a couple is actually what people think of us. when we got together at 15, so many teachers (even those that didn’t teach us) came out of their way just to tell us they disapprove of what we were doing, that we were too young to be in a relationship, and that our grades will be affected.

even after being together for 8 years and now nearing our mid 20s, i still have colleagues telling me that i’ll regret getting married and living together so young because apparently i need to be “exploring” at this age.

it was so demoralising for me and i think it affected me for a long time because i realised that no matter how ready i feel with my partner, someone else will always think that we’re too young and discourage me from what feels right to me. it always feels like i need someone’s permission to be with him.

but i’ve also realised that my partner wholeheartedly supports me and that other people’s experiences need not be my own. my partner and i both did well for O’s, for poly, and we both did well enough in our careers to secure financial aid to study uni. we did part time jobs together to support ourselves through poly, we love travelling together and we learn to love each other more everyday.

we bring out the best in each other and it’s something that nobody sees but us. my parents are so supportive of us, and he’s literally family to us and i think all of this comforts me in times when people doubt us :)
