“How to Lose Fat”, “Fat Loss Tips”, “Lost that Belly Fat”. We have seen these headlines in the media forever, but these can be such blanket terms to describe a specific issue and often gets confused with losing weight. There is a big difference between losing weight and losing fat, just because you lost weight does not mean you are losing fat as well.

Why do we want to lower our body fat? Too high levels of fat in the body put us at risk serious health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.

How does this happen? When we consume more calories than our bodies need (calories that don’t need to be used as energy) our bodies store in our fat cells (adipocyte cells) for later use. That energy can be broken down and used when a person burns more calories than they are storing.

This process is called “Lipolysis” and means that fat from the body's adipocyte cells are broken down and used for energy. This leads to weight loss if we are consistently burning more calories than we are storing.

Now most people want to LOSE FAT, not just weight. You can lose weight without losing fat by sweating a lot (water weight). If you want to LOSE FAT, you need to:

- [ ] Consistently take in fewer calories than you need for energy (this forces the body to use up its fat reserves to keep you fueled)

- [ ] After the fat is broken down, the body excretes the metabolic byproducts through sweat, urine, or through carbon dioxide when you breathe out (very cool process how our bodies do this, it even has a specific smell)
