Is Your Inner Child Crying Out for Healing?

We’ve all heard about our “inner child”, but what does that *really* mean? The thought of addressing the smaller seemingly helpless part of ourselves that never grew up can feel overwhelming, but neglecting this part of you may be doing more harm than you realize.

Today we’re addressing the problem… Later this week, we’ll be identifying some solutions and I’ll even share my own experience.

When it comes to this #gloup , your inner child is key. No more Ignoring her! This part of yourself can lead to unresolved emotional pain, repeated patterns, and unhealthy coping mechanisms that will throw all of your goals outta whack.

Here are five signs that you are neglecting your inner child :

1. Cycles of Emotional Repetition.

If you feel like you’re living the same story over and over, yet expecting a different outcome… That might be your inner child calling out. Don’t let her age fool you. Your inner child has a lot more control in your life than you may realize and I promise she’s the one making you repeat the same ol’ mistakes. (no Tame Impala– Alexa, queue music!)

2. Indulging in Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms.

From overworking to emotional eating, our inner child’s unaddressed pain often drives us to seek temporary comfort in ways that don’t serve us. Often times, these temporary comforts bring us long lasting obstacles. It’s a sign that comfort is needed, but not being acknowledged.

3. Difficulty Expressing Needs.

Struggling to voice your needs or set boundaries? You may have unresolved parts of yourself that feel unheard. You may have even taught yourself or been taught that your opinion or needs are not valuable. The societally shared sentiment that children don’t know much or the idea of a “child’s place” as made this a shared experience amongst many with unhealed inner children. At what point do we grow out of a “child’s place”? And I don’t just mean legally drinking and getting a drivers license... I mean, when do we finally give your voice validity?

4. Avoiding Vulnerability.

Anything worth having in this life requires vulnerability, but if you were raised to believe crying is unattractive and emotions are to be suppressed, you might avoid situations that make you feel exposed—even if you know they’re essential for growth.

5. Self-Sabotage.

Oftentimes our fear of success, happiness, and even pleasure stem from our inner child. This can show up as procrastination and/or pushing others away. Heck, this can show up in MANY ways. If you find yourself thinking “I *should* probably do this” but your actions say otherwise, this just may be you. This can be the manifestation of beliefs you adopted from your parents or traumatic childhood experiences intended to protect you from pain or failure.

Not even going to lie, these are only a FEW signs that you may be neglecting your inner child. If any of these signs apply to the state of your life, I hope that you stick around and turn to your #glogetter community as you work diligently to address your inner child.

Recognize these signs and understand they may stem from your inner child’s wounds.

Though none of your parental figures are or were perfect, they have done what they can to get us where we are today. It is now on US to raise and heal what’s left of our inner child so that we may show up healed for ourselves and the next loved one in our life.
