Here’s Part 1 of my food recommendations after going around Taiwan and trying different foods and restaurants!

一星名店人生的咖哩味 (Jingping MRT)

They mostly serve one main curry dish which they named 人生的咖哩味. I had the B Set (NT$299/S$12.72) which comes with their signature curry dish and a choice of drink with either Lemon Tea (夏日柠檬) or Cold Brewed Tea. I had the Lemon Tea which was on the sour side but it was definitely quite refreshing on a hot day.

Their curry is a similar style as Japanese curry and it comes with potatoes and beef. The beef had been braised for quite long as the meat was very soft and tender as if it has been simmering in the curry for very long. There were bits of tendons here and they were soft and melty instead of being gelatinous and chewy. They even have their homemade chilli which is quite spicy and adds a kick to the curry. They even allow free refills of rice and curry here!

There are also sides like their Yam Balls (NT$120/S$5.11), which was meatballs filled with Yam and covered in their curry sauce and baked with cheese, it made for an indulgent side and a filling one at that!

Zi Lin Pan Fried Dumplings (Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT)

They serve up dumplings and noodles made to order here. It is quite popular with the evening crowd as there was a queue when I went, although it only took about 10 mins for me to get my seat!

I had the Pot Stickers (NT$80/S$3.40 for 10), it had the crispy bottom with the charred edges on it which I liked. The skin on top was soft and the meat inside was also very plump and juicy. They even have a special sauce just for these pot stickers! I tried dipping it in the sauce and realised it was a sweet sauce that surprisingly went very well with the pot stickers.

Next up was their Steamed Pork Dumplings (NT$110/S$4.68 for 10), it was served in a steamer basket and they are all packed full of meat, although I kinda wished the skin on this dumpling wasn’t so thick at felt doughy at some parts.

I definitely prefer the Pot stickers here more, so you can try that! You can see the chefs making and folding the dumplings in one corner of the store so you kinda know they don’t pre make your food. Come earlier if you want to beat the dinner crowds!

草莓坊 (Tamsui MRT)

Was going around Tamsui finding some dessert to eat when I stumbled on this stall selling dried fruits and ice cream, so I thought I would check it out!

I tried their freeze dried strawberries that they sell and it was actually quite nice? It wasn’t too artificially sweet and encapsulates the taste of the strawberries. It was quite addictive to be honest, although it can get abit surfeiting after awhile. Afterwards, I ordered their Strawberry Ice Cream (NT$80/S$3.40), where they take strawberry flavoured Ice cream and smash it together with their freeze dried strawberries before serving it to you topped with more freeze dried strawberries. The smashed bits of freeze dried strawberries really gave it a crunch and contrast in flavours, although one gripe I had is that the strawberry ice cream itself had an artificial taste!

If you are visiting tamsui for sightseeing do check it out!

📍 There isn’t an exact address for this but it is located along the main area of Tamsui Old Street

胜利洋食 (Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT)

You had to make a reservation here beforehand as it was a very small eatery (with about 10-15 seating spaces available) and they had a steady stream of customers. Luckily it was a weekday night so I managed to get a seat in 15 mins!

I had their Wagyu Sando Truffle Sandwich (NT$240/S$10.21) here and it looks so gorgeous the moment it arrived, it had a pink centre (probably medium rare) with the juices oozing down the side. When you first bite into the Sando, you get hit with the savouriness of the juices and the truffle sauce paired with it. The sauce had a creamy delicateness to it which I loved. The batter on the beef wasn’t too thick as well and gives the dish more crunch and texture!

To go with the Sando, I had the Deep Fried Hokkaido Oysters (NT$99/S$4.21 for 3), the oysters were thick, fresh, and didn’t have a fishiness to it or anything. The moment you bite into the juices just burst out (be careful when eating it so you don’t burn yourself). The sauce added on top of the oysters is similar to a tartar sauce and the tanginess cuts through the oiliness of the dish and adds some finesse to it.

This is a must try if you are in the area! I would definitely be back to try their other mains and sides!
