This might be kind of controversial but hear me out β this is why thrifting is #NotForMe π π»ββοΈβ
My friends all know me as the "environmental person" because I'm always using my own lunchboxes for takeaways, buying secondhand clothes etc. Naturally, when thrifting became popular, I hopped onto the trend and started thrifting regularly. Over a year later, I'm now left with plenty of clothes I got from thrift stores that I no longer wear. Why? Because I went thrifting with the wrong mindset and got all these on impulse.
So, here's what β NOT TO DO β when you go thrifting.

I've fallen into the trap of buying clothes I don't really like that much, but still bought because it was cheap and "worth it". I purchased some oversized tees which I wore once and never again because it didn't fit me well at all. The colours were also not flattering on me, so I never reached out for them again (I got a yellow tee, and I don't wear yellow at all π₯΄).
The clothes may be affordable ($1-$5) but the prices add up if you buy a lot of cheap-but-wear-only-once items. Only get things you REALLY like and would wear repeatedly.

I've bought plenty of clothes which doesnβt fit me perfectly but I got anyway because I would "bring it to the tailor to alter". I never did it π₯Ά I also got some items to thrift flip, but I never got to it π
I realised that I prefer to get items as it is without needing any alterations because I'll never ever get to it πͺ If you're the same as me, don't buy items which doesnβt fit just because it's cheap. Ask yourself: would you buy this if it was $30? If you wouldn't, then put it back.

There's so many pieces of different styles at the thrift store, it can get pretty overwhelming. Sometimes I buy things I don't really need, like clothes which I don't usually wear but I wanna "try a new style". I usually wear these pieces once and never again. I find myself justifying unnecessary purchases by saying that I've already dugged for so long, I should buy something back. This is the wrong mindset!!! β The beauty of thrifting is that you never know what you're going to (or not) find. Only buy things you truly love and will wear repeatedly.

I am really glad that so many people enjoy thrifting now! However, I realised that buying secondhand items on Carousell instead of going thrifting at thrift stores is more suited for me. I typically look for specific items to purchase, so searching on Carousell ensures I don't overbuy and only buy what I need! This may look different for you, but I hope that you can keep these tips in mind at your next thrifting trip π
