As a biology/Chem grad I’m here to tell you what pH actually is 😉
Here’s a little chemistry lesson to help you understand your body better! The pH of something is how acidic or alkaline it is! pH is measured on a scale from 0 - 14. A pH of 7 is neutral (lower numbers are acidic and higher numbers are alkaline)
Anything with water will have a pH! And that includes you!
So, vaginal pH is created by lactobacillus bacteria aka “good bacteria” because they produce acidic byproducts which makes the vagina moderately acidic. A health vaginal pH is between 3.8 - 4.5.
The acidic environment inhibits the overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast preventing infection!
Maintaining Vaginal pH is a key component of preventing UTIs, BV, and yeast infections!
Outside of maintaining good lactobacillus bacteria, there are 5 common things that throw off vaginal pH:
• scented soaps, body washes, & feminine wash!
• Scented "feminine" wipes, tampons, pads
• Hormonal changes during your cycle or menopause
• Leaving in a tampon for over 4 hours
• Seamen due to a higher pH than the vagina
I will also add anything in the "feminine care" isle from soaps to douches will most likely throw off your pH. They’re not necessary products and you should save your money 🫶🏻
