This is the letter I provided my birth center the day I was went in to give birth to my son.
The journey of bringing a new life into this world is a precious one, but it’s also essential to be proactive about your health and well-being. For Black women, the statistics are alarming—Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. It’s crucial to take steps to ensure you receive the best possible care.
Here are some important tips to help you advocate for yourself:
🌸 Create a Birth Plan: Having a clear birth plan helps ensure your wishes are known and respected. Outline your preferences for labor, delivery, and postpartum care.
✉️ Write a Letter to Your Labor & Delivery Team: Draft a letter detailing your birth plan and any specific requests. Have this letter uploaded to your medical chart so your care team is fully aware of your desires.
👩🏾⚕️Consider Hiring a Midwife or Doula:** A midwife or doula can provide continuous support, advocate for you, and ensure your voice is heard. Their presence can make a significant difference in your birth experience.
👩🏾⚕️ Request a Diverse Care Team:Don’t hesitate to request that your care team includes Black women or women of color. Having a culturally competent team can enhance your comfort and trust during this critical time.
