edit: no longer giving out my pdi's contact as it's been some time and i'm not sure if he's still teaching. just read reviews online and find an instructor that fits your style of learning馃槉
i started learning in dec 2021 and passed in aug 2022 (with quite a few breaks in between to wait for simulator). learnt under a private instructor attached to SSDC!
How I got my license馃殫馃殭
1. Maximise my lessons! I would always be sure to rest sufficiently the night before to ensure full focus during my lesson
2. Make lessons enjoyable! I took photos and documented interesting driving experiences on my IG stories for me to look back on
3. Write notes! As much as driving is more focused on practical, writing notes allows me to revise key pointers before each lesson (I would read these on the way to the lesson). This helps ensure I don't waste time making the same mistakes with each new lesson
TIPS鈥硷笍
1锔忊儯go private
- if anyone asks, i would definitely recommend private for a more efficient learning experience (faster + cheaper). as long as you get a good instructor that fits your learning style, you're good to go!
2锔忊儯snatch those simulator slots!
- check the website every now and then, you might get lucky with the slots! and turn up ON TIME bc i've heard that they might turn you away even if you're just a few min late and you have to wait for the next slot which can be months away. or if you're lazy, just go ask for an excuse form from the driving school and get a doctor's memo to excuse you from simulators
3锔忊儯take notes and revise
- update your notes after every lesson and revise them before each lesson
4锔忊儯understand how the car works
- i memorised the "steps" for parking but you do need to also know how to improvise and adjust the car
5锔忊儯ask your instructor for test route tips
- my instructor gave me tips on what to look out for at each location (e.g. slope at certain part of circuit course, faint stop line, long red light waiting time). this made me more prepared and alert to ensure i don't make careless mistakes
6锔忊儯choose a good test date and time
- my tp test was on a Monday at 2pm so the roads were relatively clear. generally, i tried to avoid the morning rush before 11am and evening rush after 5pm as it'll be hard to change lanes if you take your test during peak hour
7锔忊儯smile and ensure instructions are clear during tp test
- remain friendly and your tester will likely reciprocate! after the tester gave an instruction, i repeated it to make sure i understood correctly and also that i won't forget it (e.g. tester says "turn right infront" and i repeat "ok turn right")
all the best for those whose tests are upcoming! and don't forget to practice after you pass as driving irl without an instructor feels quite different. feel free to ask if you have any other questions馃槉
