Heading to Guatemala? Here's everything I did in 5 days in this beautiful Central American country!🇬🇹🌋
Day 1: Antigua Guatemala
✈️Fly into Guatemala City and then head an hour outside of the city to Antigua, the city that's also a UNESCO world heritage site nestled beneath not one, not two, but THREE volcanoes
🚶♀️Free Walking Tour: Do a free walking tour and learn the layout, history, and culture of the city
🥾Hill of the Cross: Next, head to the Hill of the Cross for the best viewpoint of Antigua and the Pacaya volcano that it sits directly beneath
🥘Dinner: Eat local Guatemalan food for dinner at La Cuevita de Los Urquizú. No reservation needed here but check the opening times as some days it closes early.
Days 2&3: Acatenango Volcano
🌋Hike Acatenango Volcano: Hiking Acatenango Volcano is the most popular activity to do in Antigua and a must-do experience. Although strenuous (5,000 foot elevation gain) it's 100% worth it. You'll spend the whole day hiking up the volcano and then watch its neighbor, Volcán de Fuego, erupt through the night while you camp out at the summit. I booked my tour through OX Expeditions for only $89 USD and they were fantastic!
🥘Dinner: Once you hike down Acatenango Volcano on day 3 of your trip, you'll be pretty exhausted. At this point, I just recommend grabbing an easy but delicious dinner from Barriga Llena and tucking in early.
Days 4&5: Lake Atitlán
🚌Shuttle: On day 4 of your trip you'll grab a shuttle booked through GuateGo for $50 roundtrip and head to Lake Atitlan, which was once described by Lonely Planet as "Eden on Earth"
⛴️Ferry: Once you're at Lake Atitlan, you can take the local ferry (costs about $2 USD) around the different towns on the lake
🛁Hot Springs: Check out Los Termales (hot springs) in San Pedro La Laguna for about $10 USD per person for a soak and a stunning view of the lake
🏺Local Pottery: Head to Ceramica Palopo Multicolor in San Antonio Palopó for a tour of a local pottery shop and the ability to purchase handmade ceramics
🥾Mayan Face Mirador: Hike Indian Nose at sunrise for a stunning view of Lake Atitlán and the surrounding volcanoes
