anxious attachment style is often rooted in abandonment fears and care-related inconsistencies growing up. it's often developed when children are dependent on unreliable caregivers. they repeatedly learn that their caregivers may or may not come through when needed.

or it’s possible that your anxious attachment comes from inconsistencies with your friendships growing up, or may have been born out of your first romantic and sexual experiences.

some people had extremely reliable caregivers growing up, yet they still experience anxious attachment.

whatever the cause, it’s important to be responsible for our attachment style and be considerate of how it affects other people.

these are 3 steps to start healing your anxious attachment style:

1. learn your triggers 🔫 try to think back to past instances where you were triggered and had an upset. make note of what it was specifically about those situations that set you off, and do your best to be aware of them as they continue to come up in your life.

2. practice mindfulness to not react strongly to perceived threats 🧠 it’s much easier said then done to be a person who gets triggered and still waits before reacting. but practising mindfulness meditation will start to give you access to self-soothing techniques that will make it easier to not react emotionally.

3. practice emotionally regulating by yourself 🧘🏼‍♀️ if you rely on your partner or other people to be the source of emotional regulation for you, your anxious attachment will only continue to strengthen. when you’re getting anxious and scared of being alone, practice emotional regulation techniques on your own to train yourself to see that you will not die from being alone.
