Test shoots — How do you prepare for them

Back in 2021 I had the opportunity to collaborate with an artist that was exploring photography & a training makeup artist

I was honestly very surprised by the results & collaged them together to create my first comp card & mini portfolio!

If you’re keen to get started on creating your portfolio & are not sure what to do, you can

1. Look for photographers who are just starting out as well & looking to build their portfolio. Drop them a DM to see if they are keen to collaborate.

2. Research & create a mood board before the photoshoot so that you get to create images that are useful for you to land jobs & not just aesthetic

3. Practice in the mirror or even video yourself posing — Suddenly you will realise your hands are in the way/everything feels rather unnatural. Research, observe & learn!

4. Think about your hair colour & hair length before you take shots for your comp card. You would want to portray the more accurate image of yourself so that your client will know what to expect when you send them your comp card. Eg, I had shoulder length hair in my first comp card & had to shoot another as my hair is now much longer.
