First, let me start by saying, I love Book of the Month Club! I signed up last Christmas and have been obsessed since. I purchased each of these books there.
Normally, I only read thrillers or mysteries, so it actually came as a surprise to me that I ended up loving some books from a different genre. Let’s get to the ratings! 👇🏼
1) A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham.
This is the book that actually made me LOVE reading again. It had been some time since I had picked up a book for enjoyment, but this book reminded me why I’ve always loved to read. It is a definite mystery book that kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page.
TW: Serial Killer; Mental Illness; Other
2) This Close to Okay by Leesa Cross-Smith
I did not expect to even like this book, but I ended up falling in love with it. It’s based on Kentucky, which is where I’m from, so I felt I had a small connection to it from the beginning. Although I wouldn’t recommend hanging out with strangers, this book showed me just how important other people are and how human connection can save your life.
TW: Suicidal Ideation/Attempt; Mental Illness; Other
3) What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
This one was filled with plot twists. I definitely did not expect the ending, which was nice, because some books of this genre are very predictable. Friendships, backstabbing, lying, murder. All the good things in this one!
TW: Serial Killer; Graphic; Other
4) Weyward by Emilia Hart
Such a beautiful story of powerful women across five centuries. This book is told from the viewpoints of three different women. This was so compelling and really pulled at my heartstrings.
TW: DV; Murder; Abandonment; Other
5) The People We Keep by Allison Larkin
It took me awhile to pick this up after I bought it. It isn’t my usual genre and I had no intention of enjoying it as much as I did. The struggles of a young woman trying to navigate her way through life and find where she belongs. From a woman (myself) who has never felt as if she fit in anywhere, this one had me a little emotional.
TW: Family Issues; Homelessness; Other
I hope you all read at least one of these books and enjoy them as much as I have! Please let me know your thoughts on these if you read or have read them. I love hearing what others think of the books I recommend.
Happy Reading! 📚🫶🏼
**I’ve listed “other” under TWs for these books because I know things can be triggering to others that weren’t to me, so I want to be mindful of that and hope that others will do research on these books before purchasing if they tend to be triggered by themes in books.
