Group Fitness Era - 8/10

GF sparked my love of exercise. Before walking into a class I’d never lifted weights before in my life and within weeks I was taking 5 classes a week! It also gave me a community when I was fresh out of a breakup. My obsession was obvious to everyone and the instructors encouraged me to get certified and become a trainer myself. Eventually though I outgrew group classes as my goals got more specific.

Park Workout Era - 6/10

Calisthenics also provided another community. I would workout in the park and started a twice a week women’s workout class that was free to all. It was supposed to be an inclusive place for women to get together and support each other. The park was where I started my own classes and business. Park workouts got me STRONG but you can’t train legs very well without weight so eventually I decided to re-join a gym.

Equinox Era - 8/10

This is where I fell in love with eucalyptus towels and barbells. I became a beefcake and lifted 5-6 times a week. I would go to the gym, shower, and use their lounge as my co-working space. I was so obsessed but the membership was so expensive that I would workout just to make it worth it!

At Home Workout Era - 6/10

This helped me survive the pandemic while recovering from a bad back injury. For the first time I wasn’t tempted to pick-up anything too heavy, show off, or challenge myself. I was able to recover. Once I was healed, I also got a chance to really hone in on my kettlebell skills. I had a hard time motivating at home though.

Local Gym Era 7/10 (my current era)

I’d been thinking about joining a gym for over a year but there wasn’t one around me that was half decent. One day on IG I saw a friend posted that a local New York Sports Club got renovated and the next day I went to check it out, was decently impressed, and joined. After 3 years of working out at home, getting back in a gym has been super motivating. The gym is crowded and dirty though. And their kettlebells are lighter and more limited than mine 😜But having a place to go for even one hour a day has been a really nice change of pace.
