Studying abroad: Finding an apartment 🏡

If you’re looking to study overseas, especially Australia, this might be helpful!

When looking at housing options, my best advice is to start living in uni dorms for your first year or at least half a year if you don’t have a few friends in the city you’re studying in! 👯‍♀️

This can be super helpful in making friends and also saving $$. It’s also a safe option and you don’t really need to think much. You could also look at student accoms like SCAPE, IGLU, JOURNAL, UNI LODGE, and many more however the prices are pretty steep and you can’t have guests over. You might also be sharing toilets etc. 😷

I felt that having an apartment was the best option for me. I started doing research really early on, maybe 5months before my uni even starts.

💰Average pricing for city apartments (one bedroom/studio) are $400-500/week

💰Additional costs like utility bills and furnishing must be taken into consideration as well. I spent about $6k AUD furnishing my apartment.

STEPS TO GETTING AN APARTMENT OVERSEAS:

1. Pick a few apartments that match your interests (location, cleanliness, budget) using the real estate app or domain app📲

2. Set up in person inspections 🧍🏻‍♀️(landlords will most likely not deem you as a good candidate for a tenant if you don’t have someone view the apartment in person)

3. Apply for the apartment of your choice and submit the necessary documents📄, liaise with the agent to confirm that the place meets your requirements

4. They will most likely tell you if you got the apartment within 1 week

5. Moving in and signing all the contracts

6. FURNISHING 😭 This realistically takes a week minimum

My opinion is to come 3 weeks before school starts! Do thorough research on prices and location of the area as well. It helps if you have friends or family to help check out the area before applying for the apartment.
