Color Mixing: START HERE

If you want to understand color and learn a practical approach to color mixing, start here! Edwards is so good at making complicated things simplified and approachable. I cannot recommend her color mixing exercises enough. She uses acrylic, but I have done most of these lessons in gouache or watercolor, and it all works out! So use what you have. Her lessons on light and shadow and how they affect color will transform your painting experience. My recommendation for supplies is to buy an inexpensive student grade set of color mixing colors. You’ll want pure pigments, so it’s important to go with a good brand. And you’ll end up using all of the white and yellow, and you don’t want to use materials that you are too attached to or are super expensive.
