After spending a week in Tokyo, here are some affordable and delicious places I recommend. I’ll put the names of the restaurants in the comments for easy copying.

Shinjuku

- Gyukatsu Motomura: A must-try in Tokyo, featuring fried beef cutlets that are then grilled. The unique dipping sauce enhances the experience. One and a half cutlets per person is usually enough. It’s quite popular, so expect to wait on weekdays. Budget around ¥200+ per person.

- Marugame Seimen: Specializes in udon noodles, which completely changed my perception of them. The noodles are chewy and soft, and the broth is rich and flavorful. Various side dishes are also tasty. It can be crowded during meal times. Budget around ¥40+ per person.

- Nabezo Shinjuku Meiji Dori: Known for sukiyaki, and it’s a buffet. The ¥200+ option is sufficient, offering local beef, beef tongue, and pork. It’s quite a value, though you can’t add more dishes after 10 PM. It’s a bit hard to find.

- Otako Shinjuku: A famous oden shop with a history of over a hundred years. The taste differs from the oden found in convenience stores in Japan, leaning towards a sweeter flavor with some unique ingredients. There are options for single or double servings. Budget around ¥70+ per person.

- Yoshinoya: The most cost-effective meal of the trip. With the added beef option, the meat portion is about three times more than in China for the same price. Beef lovers should not miss it. Adding a onsen egg makes it even better. Budget around ¥40+ per person.

- Isomaru Suisan: Known for its seafood barbecue, it was so impressive on my last visit to Japan that I went again. The sashimi is very affordable and you can eat to your heart’s content. However, I started feeling unwell shortly after, so it might be hard to visit again. Budget around ¥150+ per person.

Ginza

- Kyushu Jangara: A very popular Kyushu ramen spot near Ginza Six. There might be a wait, but it’s worth it. The broth is much richer compared to Ichiran, and the pork belly melts in your mouth. Budget around ¥50+ per person.

Harajuku

- Aoyama Kawakami-an: Specializes in soba noodles. I had the cold duck meat soba, where the noodles and broth are served separately. The soba noodles are chewy and the flavor is good. The tempura here is also great. The location is a bit hard to find, so I wouldn’t suggest going out of your way. Budget around ¥150+ per person.

Coffee & Matcha

- Neel: Recently popular, known for its pear dish. Located in Harajuku, it’s a small and hard-to-find place. The food is decent; coffee is average. Worth a stop if you’re in the area.

- Sawawa Asakusa: Specializes in matcha and is located right by Asakusa Temple. I had a matcha drink and ice cream, which were both quite good and reasonably priced. Recommended.

- Blue Bottle Coffee: Quite trendy, so I gave it a try. The taste is decent, and the logo is attractive. They have many locations.

- Foru Cafe: Located in Harajuku, a bit pricey but the coffee is good. The matcha lemonade is surprisingly delicious. Recommended
