🍎My experience: Living with my in-laws

A friend of mine was recently engaged and the topic on housing came up. She had BTO-ed and will be choosing a unit soon. However, due to the long construction time, it’d be another 4-5 years before she’d get her house. I’ve been staying with my in-laws for about a year now and I thought it’d be interesting to share about my experience living with them.

Generally, I’d a great stay with my in-laws. I count myself lucky that we got along well. Sure, there were a few instances of displeasures but these were quickly resolved and forgotten. I’m really thankful to have such easygoing in-laws and grateful for their care🙏🙏

Without further ado, here are some pros I’d gotten to enjoy while staying with my in-laws:

1) 🍳🍱🍜 FOOD! Most of my meals were provided. My father-in-law (FIL) gets up really early, at 4am, for work. He had never failed to prepare eggs and a cup of milo for me before leaving for work. My mother-in-law (MIL) either buys takeaway or cooks dinner. I try to help out with the meal preparation after work sometimes or during the weekends. Truly blessed to be fed well😋😋

2) 🗣️👩🏻👦🏻 BONDING! I got to know my in-laws better. Their likes, preferences, quirks etc. It helped me to grow comfortable in interacting with them. I enjoyed talking to my MIL about different topics and liked how forthcoming she was.

3) 🏞️🛍️🛒 FAMILY OUTINGS! I look forward to these as it’s a great catch-up with other relatives. I am not just acquainted with them, but actually feel a sense of belonging to the extended family.

4) 💰Last but not least, MONEY. We contribute between $1-1.5k to the family expenses each month. It’s still cheaper than renting or maintaining our own place.

Amidst all the glitter and gold, there is one con about staying with my in-laws. And that would be PRIVACY. When hubby and I get intimate, we’re quite mindful of their presence and would keep our volume down. Any sensitive items were also kept out of their sight as my in-laws might enter our room to pass us things.

As a whole, I truly enjoyed staying with my in-laws and I know I’d miss their presence when we eventually shift out 🥰
