I’m an introvert doing a job for extroverts

My job requires a lot of talking. In fact, I talk almost non stop, every single, day at my job. My whole job is to talk to people who have difficulty with communication and help them to communicate with me, which often times leaves me doing a majority of the talking and the majority of the conversational burden on my shoulders. I’m a speech therapist.

I’m a person that really struggles with talking to new people. I’m a person who gets physically, emotionally, and mentally drained after a full day of talking to people. I’m a person who prefers quiet interactions with familiar people.

But none of that really aligns with how a typical day goes at my job. I used to think this would make me, or DID make me bad at my job. I’ve come to discover that in some ways, it makes me really good at my job.

I’m a good listener. I’m observant. I’m genuine. I build strong relationships. I push myself outside of my comfort zone CONSTANTLY, which helps me to always be growing.

I’m so glad I didn’t let my self doubt or my preconceived notions that I HAD to be more extroverted to be good at this job get in the way of me going into speech.

Being extroverted is often categorized as being “the gold standard”, but I’m here to say that being introverted makes you just as valid, capable, and valuable as anyone else
