Step by Step Creating Perfect Baju Kurung!

Planning for your own dream dress could be very fun same goes to planning your own baju kurung! I enjoyed every steps in preparing my own dream baju kurung. I’ll share with you what I did to achieve the perfect baju kurung.

Before anything else, having your own inspiration for your baju kurung is needed. What type of baju kurung youre going to produce should already be in your mind; is it kurung kedah, or will it be classic kurung or could it be the kurung kedah? You surely have the answer. But, getting inspirations from other brands could help you execute the baju kurung better! What I did last time was searching through the pinterest to find the designs I like using the copy and paste method. While scrolling the pinterest i found few of my likes but there are certain parts i dislike, resulted to combining the parts i like making it to one design.

Next part is surveying the tailors. You can go from the high end tailors to underground tailors. Finding good tailor that matches your taste is a little gamble game if you have never tried any. The last time I made my kurung from scratch was during secondary school. It’s been almost a decade. But doing surveys can really help especially in deciding your budget. Usually you can send them the design first and ask for advise in term of type of fabric need to be used, and any recommendations to improve the design.

Shopping time is always my favourite part of all. I love fabric shopping. I learned a lot about different textile for every visits in different shops. Brands like Jakel, Gulatis and Gio Fabric are my top choices as they have wide range of textiles. For me, I personally love chiffons, but this time around, I go for satin but a matte satin. It doesn’t appear too shiny. I am a sucker for laces. My kurung need to have laces. For this kurung, i decided to have a very minimal color combinations, so I chose the lace of similar color with my kurung.

It’s finally time to meet the tailor to hand them the fabric. I would have discussion with my tailor, asking for his or her advise for my design. It will be easier now since the cloth is with us. So any improvements to the designs can be proposed before they start sewing. My tailor will give me his best honest opinion especially for me, his plussize customer and i will always trust his words since his works are mostly satisfying.

We reached the fitting time! Fitting is the final step. I always got nervous when it comes to fitting. I know I should chill a bit because this is not even my wedding dress. But me being me, I will still get nervous since I’m afraid if I couldn’t fit on certain parts. I had the bad experience with other tailor where I couldn’t fit my baju kurung. Please please try it on before taking it home. And make sure the outcome is perfect and comfortable for you to wear. You can ask for alterations if you find it uncomfortable or lack in certain parts. We don’t want to waste our time to keep coming back for alterations.
