How did I get the amount of food so wrong?

I had my first big party last night and I cooked and bought enough food to feed an army apparently. About 22 guests in total, I kind of thought I had to make enough so people could have 2 of everything (jalepeno poppers, cheese straws, chips & dip, cookies, cake, etc.) And a ton of options.
In the end, I ended up sending people home with plates of food and still have a ton of it in my fridge. It wasn't as though no one was eating, people were stuffing their faces!
How did I get the amount of food so wrong?
