Whats my hair type?

lately, I've been wondering what my hair type is. I have had heavy, thick hair all my life, and the curly hair gene runs in my family. I've been told that if my hair were shorter and I had more layers, my hair would hold a curl, but I like the length of it right now. I want to try newer products for curly hair, but I don't want to spend the money on something that might not even work since those products can be expensive. what should I do???
