Negotiating for a higher salary can be a daunting task, but it is also an important one. There have been times in my own career, especially at the start, when I felt uncomfortable negotiating for a higher salary.

I often gaslit myself into brelieving I am not worth the money, or that I am not qualified to ask for more. However, I have learned that these feelings are often unfounded — most employers are open to negotiating salary, as long as you are prepared to make a strong case for yourself.

So here are my tips for negotiating a higher salary:

1. Do your research

Before you even start negotiating, it is important to know what your worth is. Research salary trends for your position and experience level. You can also use online salary calculators to get an estimate of your market value.

2. Be prepared to discuss your accomplishments

When you are negotiating for a higher salary, be prepared to talk about your accomplishments. Be specific and quantifiable. For example, I prepared a list of my accomplishments during my annual appraisal; I knew I had exceeded expectations consistently and presented my case with conviction.

3. Be confident

Confidence is key when negotiating for a higher salary. Believe in yourself and your worth. If you don't believe you deserve a higher salary, neither will your employer.

4. Be willing to walk away

If you are not happy with the salary offer, be prepared to walk away from the negotiation. There are plenty of other opportunities out there, and you don't want to settle for a salary that is below your market value.

In my case, my manager was impressed with my accomplishments and agreed to give me a raise but at the same time, I was willing to tender should I be disatisfied with their counter offer.

It may take some time to find the right opportunity and to get the salary you deserve but don't give up!
