Framing original art without the glass

I’ve found that leaving the painting exposed allows for it to truly shine. I like to frame my original paintings without the glass. If you’re doing the same, here is my advice.

Keep in mind what the painting is made of. If the paper or paint is archival or not. Archival paper and paint will prolong the life of the painting. In addition, I treat the surface area with an archival varnish to protect against UV rays. This also slows you to dust the painting and create no damage to it’s surface. If the painting isn’t already treated in this way, it’s an easy step you can do to ensure you get the most life out of your painting.

If the frame can easily(or easy enough) be taken apart, then I would frame the painting with the glass behind the painting, but add a protective layer of paper between the glass and the painting. You never know when you might change your mind down the road and wish you had kept the original glass.
