QUITTING FAST FASHION

This is hard for me to post. I pride myself on being an environmentalist who cares deeply about our planet; I recycle, reduce plastic waste, volunteer for my community, turn off lights, and try to avoid any and all food waste. I work really hard.

And yet, I spend my days online shopping on fast fashion websites like SHEIN and temu. I know the affects these brands have on the planet and upon its workers, yet I am addicted to the thrill of getting a large package at my door with tons of new items, despite their low quality. It almost feels like my “dirty little secret”. Here’s Rose, a devout planet-saver, who enjoys buying from brands who abuse their workers and destroy the environment.

Not only the environmental impact, but the monetary impact these brands have on me weigh me down. I have probably spent over a thousand dollars on these websites alone. That money should’ve been used to save up for my future or invest in quality items that would genuinely benefit me, but instead I just threw it away. I am not struggling financially. I make enough to live comfortably and have an amazing support system that would help me if I couldn’t. But there is no reason for me to spend hundreds of dollars every month on crap I don’t even need.

So I’m quitting cold turkey! I’ve blocked emails from these websites and deleted them entirely from my phone. I’m going to stop clicking on shein and temu “hauls” I see on social media. If I need an item desperately enough, I can thrift it, buy second hand off of marketplace, or even get it at the store. But I’m trying to avoid these sweat shops that have such a negative effect on my life.
