Reality of moving in mid-reno 🫠

If you've seen my project timeline in one of my previous posts, you would notice that I moved in mid-renovation. We moved in after hacking works and before our kitchen carpentry was done. This early move-in date was mainly to save costs on rental.

This is kind of a follow-up post for those who intend to renovate your homes in phases like we do and move in early.

The moment we received a date for our key collection, we knew we wanted to move in as soon as possible. Also partly, I got tired of the issues that we faced in our rental & felt suffocated with the small space. Perhaps that will be a post for another day!

So, since then, we made it clear to our PM that we had a specific date to move in & would ideally like the renovation to be completed before we moved in. As we all know by now, a renovation is not a renovation without hiccups & delays. Regardless, we still had to move because our lease was already ending.

If you intend to move early, just know that this experience hasn't been the most easy for us. And especially because I work from home, I had to always find ways to make my workspace functional enough. There will be constant cleaning, moving furnitures around & living in a mess because our 'clean space' was only our bedroom, one of our common bedrooms and our store where we kept all our stuff to keep them dust free. Also, because I was always at home, I had to manage the contractors sometimes as my PM wouldn't come all the time. So, that's one thing to note.

Would I still recommend people to move in mid-reno? Absolutely, not. Only if you have to 😬. We really didn't have much of a choice. Also, micro renovation dust is such a nightmare. Be prepared to mop the floors more than 10 times in the beginning.
