Making a Modern Shiplap Wall 🖤

Shiplap is NOT outdated! Many people are moving away from the shiplap look, but we made this shiplap wall in 2019 and have modernized it to fit our style today.

Why is it called shiplap? According to Google, "shiplap likely gets its name from a style of shiplap that was once used to make ships. The same overlapping joint that makes true shiplap tight and weatherproof in a house made for a water-tight ship, too."

Cool right? Ok, maybe not, but now you know. The shiplap style can be classic and modern. I'm not a "farmhouse style" fan so I wanted to make sure our shiplap was a fit for our home.

Home Depot sells shiplap panels if you don't want to install them board by board. We used thick MDF boards that my husband routered on both sides (with a router tool to give the edges that angled look). Almost any boards will work, though! You just want that stacked look with a thickness you like.

We nailed them directly to the wall and then painted it Swiss Coffee white by Valspar. A few years later we repainted it Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams.

There's no "right" or "wrong" way to do shiplap. I've had friends put shiplap on their kitchen islands or as a small accent area in a bedroom. If you like the look of it, try it out!
