I used to not like admitting I am an introvert but as I matured I see no harm in accepting what I am comfortable with and what my personality is like.
By accepting my introvert trait I have noticed a decrease of anxiety. I now am honest with myself how I feel when being social and what is too much for me.
In the past I used to get super overwhelmed when I had to be in a social environment because I would force myself to do so. This would result in me not wanting to go out and this was not healthy for me.
I know want to be social but in a healthy way. And I do so by encouraging myself and keeping a balance!
This is how I do it!
1. I am realistic when making plans. I want to decrease the chances of canceling on someone therefore I am realistic when agreeing. If I know from the beginning that I will most likely not want to go to that social event or environment then I don’t commit yet if I do commit I push myself to do and keep myself accountable.
2. I set boundaries. It’s easy to feel pressure to attend a gathering because others are going yet if I am not comfortable with it I voice it out. I will not allow myself to feel victim by agreeing to something just because I was peer pressured so therefore I set boundaries with myself.
3. Once in a social setting I count small talk as a victory. Even though I am not someone who loves small talk I have to start somewhere. It is okay to start off with small talk not everyone will be your best friends or has to be when first meetings.
