how much should you feed your cats?

every cat is different, but it’s not as hard as you think!

step one: check body condition

- what are your goals for your cat? gaining, losing, or maintaining their weight? this can help tell you if you’ve been feeding the right amount of food, or need to change it up. using a chart like this one can help guide you if you aren’t sure where your cat falls!

step two: use a cat food calculator

- there are a BUNCH online, some asking different questions like spay/neuter status, what they’re currently being fed, and/or activity level. input the information as accurate as possible, and see how many calories it recommends. i suggest using multiple different sites and feeding the average of all the recommendations, since they can vary by 10-20 kcal.

step three: check food calories

- look at the food you’re feeding now, and find the “calorie content” section on the back. look for “kcal/can” or “kcal/cup” or some similar phrasing. use this number to calculate how many cans/cups of food you should be giving your cat per day, and then decide how to divide that number across your feeding times!

my cats differ in how they like their calories split up, even though they eat fairly similar amounts; dipper eats 3 meals at 90, 20, and 100 kcals, while jinx eats his 3 meals at 75, 75, 80 kcals—again, every cat is different!
