convincing parents to let me get a tattoo @ 19 😮‍💨🐉🤝🏼

thinking about getting a tattoo but you have STRICT ASIAN PARENTS? don’t know how to start convincing them? 🤕 let me share with you how i convinced mine, and hopefully this guides you well in persuading them 🥰

firstly, some context - fortunately, i do not have very strict parents. however, when it comes to tattoos, my mom especially, is pretty set on NOT allowing me to get them. if i remember correctly, it took me > 6 months to convince her.

in the beginning, i asked her to give me a reason why i couldn’t get it 😅 she kept saying “no means no” which was tough bc?!?! there was no reason?!?! after awhile she gave me 2 conditions - (1) wait until you earn money (2) wait until youre 21. so i got a job 😈

here’s what i did to show her that i was committed:

1 - SHOW DETERMINATION ‼️✨ i did this by getting a part time events job. at that time i was a poly student who only worked event-based jobs, so i quickly got myself a job at myprotein as a picker! THE JOB WAS DAMN SHAG FOR $8/HOUR… 🥵 work until late, start early in the morning. i was rly tired and she did ask me not to go anymore… but SHOW DETERMINATION!!! i worked for about a week and earned $400+ 🤑 enough for my tattoo

2 - DO THOROUGH RESEARCH 🔬 make sure you know how to answer every question they ask you about it!

where you want to put the tattoo? what artist? how much? whats the process like?

my mom thought i was hot headed about it, but i gathered all my information before i went to ask her again 🤭 they will trust you more after this cause it will obv show you’re serious about it, and its not just a YOLO thing (even if it is 😩)

i showed them the artist’s work, told them the price of it, and showed them the pain level chart (last picture!)

3 - GIVE IT SOME TIME ⌚️ as much as you want it now, you cannot expect them to give in so quickly if they’re strict right… it took me a few months to get the approval. this is simply just bc they’re worried you will regret it in the future (esp bc mine might come off ah lian) but if you show them that even after awhile you still want that same piece, they might be a littleee more convinced that you’re not being RASH 🫣 don’t throw a tantrum if they’re not budging, bc personally i think they will be even more against it after.

and thats about it! one more small tip… i think showing puppy eyes + pouting + deh a bit might nudge them a little HAHAHAHAHAHA. go do some housework and por them 😂

anyways! i hope this gives you some hope that stubborn parents might give in eventually bc mine didnt allow me at first too… 🥲
