I get asked about intermittent fasting a lot as a dietitian. I don’t really have a quick, straight forward answer and have mixed opinions.

First of all, what is it? It is eating in a certain time window (often 8 hours) and fasting for the rest of the day. As an example, this could look like someone being able to eat from noon to 8pm.

I don’t like when people are really strict with their time windows because it can cause a poor relationship with food, overeating/binging, and make social situations tough.

I do think some people could benefit from doing it loosely, depending on their work schedule, workout schedule, and times of day they feel more hungry. I don’t think there needs to be a label for that though. There’s no need to call it intermittent fasting.

Even if it works with your schedule, we then run into the issue of struggling to get enough protein in and eating less nutrient dense foods (fruits and veggies) because you are too full.

If you are working out in the AM I would NOT recommend not eating after and waiting until you are “allowed” to eat. You are doing yourself a disservice!

The negatives seem to outweigh the positives for most people.
