Most people could benefit from doing both at some point!! If you have fitness or fat loss goals it would be beneficial to track macros (in an app like My Fitness Pal) for at least some period of time to learn portion sizes, what your meals should look like, what foods are high in protein, etc.

The goal is never to track macros for the rest of your life, so as you are doing it make sure you are learning something! Then you can apply that education when you decide to stop tracking.

I think using a food log can be really helpful when transitioning away from tracking macros, if your goal is to just maintain, or if you are new to your fitness journey and still have a lot of habits you can improve.

If you are newer, you can set goals like decreasing sugary drinks, making your lunch for work instead of getting fast food, getting a veggie in both your lunch and dinner, and you will most likely be consuming less calories than you were before.

For people who are more advanced it can be a little more tough. You already workout 5+ times a week, eat healthy, etc. If you still have fat you want to lose, macros can be really helpful because it is very detailed.
