While these books made me go WTF, I’d like to still preface that I quite like magical realism and sci-fi because these genres have no limits to how much reality can be stretched, bent, and remodelled.

And obviously that brings along with it numerous WTF moments!

Ive read a lot more books that are like that but here are 3 that I read in 2023.

1. All’s well

How was Awad’s writing style you ask? All’s well! She managed to make me feel both pity and contempt for the main character, but I still somehow found myself rooting for her. It’s kinda like Walter White- you know that a villain is villainous but you still wholeheartedly wish that things would work out for them.

That said, this book made me so afraid of having chronic pains in future. I’ve seen older family members suffer, & it’s almost like being confined in your own prison.

“We all fall, Ms. Fitch. We fall and we rise. Bones and tissue heal. But sometimes we want to hold on to the pain. Sometimes we have our reasons for not being able to let go.”

2. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Suskind

This one almost made it into my list of books that I could not put down.

I found myself thinking a lot about how horrible it must be to be gifted with an extraordinary, superhuman sense of smell. Taking the MRT’s probably damn traumatic

It’s an interesting read and if you’re looking for something to break the monotony, this one’s it.

“There was only one thing the perfume could not do. It could not turn him into a person who could love and be loved like everyone else. So, to hell with it he thought. To hell with the world. With the perfume. With himself.”

3. Tender is the Flesh, by Agustina Bazterrica

This one made me go vegan for a few week.

It’s not a book that virtue signals, but it was just so uncomfortable and grotesque!

I generally enjoy books that stretch the boundaries of what makes us human and what makes us different from animals. This one truly takes the cake. It’s a damn impactful book and I wished it didn’t end.

“The human being is the cause of all evil in this world. We are our own virus.”
