Good afternoon 🍋8️⃣ residents,
After my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder Type 1 and treatment for a manic episode in March this year, I still experience treacherous waves of ‘good feelings’ and depression. It’s hard to define a good day as I used to believe it can turn deadly at any given moment. The instability is rough😓
However, today I came across a post from intlbipolar on Instagram and it delivered the very message I have been looking for. What’s the difference between hypomania and being the extroverted, talkative and my joyful self?
• The personality of a person before learning of their bipolar diagnosis is still there
• Hypomania can be hard to identify at times when someone is naturally an extrovert, creative, talkative etc. (me)
Some advises that I find effective (didn’t realize that I’ve been doing these! I was and still am desperate for stability):
• Ask loved ones if they have noticed any type of unusual behavior
• Noting if there have been any negative consequences to your actions
• Watch out for other symptoms of hypomania, including lack of sleep, hyper-sexuality, irresponsible spending etc.
• Keeping a journal and recognizing previous precursors to a manic episode.
Bipolar Disorder might affects your behaviors in the most tragic ways, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve recovery, compassion and happiness. It is a prt of you but it doesn’t define who you are as a person:)
