[Resensi Buku] Jujur Aku Gila/Waras ❤️‍🩹

Good afternoon 🍋8️⃣ residents,

It’s been a while since I have read any form of Malay literature. I have been preoccupied with our colonizers’ languages (English and Japanese); reading and learning the languages to increase my survival rate in academia. My goal this year is to fix that and ‘Aku Nabi Isa!: Refleksi Wad Sakit Jiwa’ by Dr. Rozanizam Zakaria is an apt book to kick off this mission! I also need to write book reviews in Malay soon😅

Dr. Nizam has worked in psychiatric ward in Australia for several years before returning to tanah air. There, he was faced with various types of psych ward patients—from Iranian refugees with depression to old an man who self-proclaimed as Jesus—they constantly remind him of the importance of religion, faith, family, birth country and self-preservation.

I especially love the discussion about aggression as either a part of one’s personality or a result of untreated mental illness. Psychiatrists need to be able to tell the differences and that has proven to be difficult. Theoretically, people with anti-social personality might not need the medication prescribed to patients with schizophrenia for example; even though they’re violent on the ‘same scale’. Violence is not a symptom but rather a result of neglect, but even that is a broad generalization.

The commentary on how to curb sexual violence as per Islamic teachings is also on-point. Men who aren’t able to do so are a parasite to society and must be dealt with severe punishments.

Dr. Nizam also uses the opportunity to raise awareness of our capability to have awareness in the first place. Hadiths and lessons of old are sprinkled throughout each stories as a reminder to keep our faith strong and intact, for when we are faced with struggles, God will be there, watching out for you.
