Good morning 🍋8️⃣ residents,

My reading this year is jam packed with non-fiction; well, specifically women’s studies and psychology. Aside from medication and psychotherapy, I love to read books that addresses women’s issues because the root of my pain most likely originates from the same source we have been dealing with since forever: patriarchy.

But what does it means actually? That’s where these books serve as a beacon of truth.

📚 Women Therapy by Harriet Goldhor Lerner is a collection of published material that focuses on female psychology. So far I have read the first half and it covers so many complex layers of the origin of femininity, girlhood, motherhood, marriage and their intricate connection with women’s mental health. I highly recommend it to all women out there if you’re struggling with people pleasing, self-esteem, depression, anger issues or if you have rocky relationship with your parents/partner. Quotes and chapters in the next slides!

📚 Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women by Geraldine Brooks is a hard one to read through. I mean finding out the negative parts of your own religion/community/culture isn’t exactly fun, but it is the reality that a quarter of Muslim women are experiencing right now as we speak. The blurb reads: ‘This book is a story of Brooks’s intrepid journey toward an understanding of the women behind the veils, and of contradictory political, religious and cultural forces that shape their lives. Defying our stereotypes about the Muslim world, Brooks’s acute analysis of the world’s fastest-growing religion deftly illustrates how Islam’s holiest texts have been misused to justify the repression of women, and how male pride and power have warped the original message of a once-liberating faith.’

I wake up everyday with these books waiting for me to be read and understood…best feeling 💖
