Fall is for secret societies and PSL 🍁🍂🎃

Picture this: it’s fall, the leaves are changing colors, sweater weather has arrived, you’ve got a warm cup of tea in your hands, and all you’re missing is a perfect book to set the mood. 🍁

Enter the genre of Dark Academia, and thus, the OG of this aesthetic and genre: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. 🏛

I read this book many years ago, and chose to re-read it a couple of weeks ago. And let me tell you something, it is still MARVELOUS! There’s a reason they call this book the father of DA and preppy books.

It tells the story of a couple of privileged white kids at a private college from the north east. There, they join a secret society focused on studying Greek life: all the way from the way the Greeks lived in Ancient Greece to the way the great Greek Thinkers debated, and the content of their debates. 🏛

But then one of them dies. 👻💀

What’s so wonderful about this book is that these stories are pointless, besides the one death, there’s nothing really of sustenance in these pages other than the privileged and petty disputes between wealthy kids. It is so massively distant from reality that it makes this book a true masterpiece.

Beautiful prose, wonderful story-telling, and infuriatingly interesting characters makes The Secret History one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So, next time you’re at your local library or bookstore, consider getting this book and spending a weekend with its pompous characters and its autumn aesthetic. 🍁
