Medellin is one of Colombia’s best-kept secrets. Due to the decorated past of the “City of the Eternal Spring”, tourism isn’t as high as in the cities of Bogota and Cartagena. Medellin is the perfect place to experience Colombian culture without it being watered down to fit social media. In the past 4 months I’ve leisurely traveled to Medellin twice, and here are my recommendations for doing Medellin the right way.

𝟏. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞:

Comuna 13 used to be one of the most dangerous places in all of Colombia. Now it’s a community filled with beautiful street art, thriving businesses, and much more. I recommend taking the Graffiti Tour which you can book through Airbnb. Usually, the tour guide is someone local to the area so you get to hear more than facts, it’s also their story.

𝟐. 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝗪𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬 🍾🍾

You’re going to party at Parque Lleras and Provenza, which are the key nightlife districts. However, I recommend going to the local bars and clubs that are less Americanized. You might not understand the music, it might be harder to order drinks/food; it’ll be an experience you won’t forget.

𝟑. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐀 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧

I recommend Guatapé for its most famous attractions of nearly 700 steps (not pictured here because I looked and felt like hell after climbing them). If intense physical activity is not for you, the town of Guatapé has more to offer such as coffee shops, local cuisine, and colorful street art and houses.

𝟒. 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 ☕️

If you’re a coffee drinker there is no way you go to Colombia and not have coffee. I cheated and got my coffee with my brunch at the gorgeous and instagrammable Café Noir, instead of a coffee farm but it was delicious and covered in edible glitter.

If you were thinking about visiting Colombia but were worried about safety, language barrier, etc. this is your sign to book the trip.🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
