In the first few weeks of my first undergraduate year, I applied for an ambassadorship role in my university, with responsibilities that mainly include assisting in promoting the university’s courses and facilities. I passed the initial CV screening, and an interview timing was set up a few moments later.
At that time, I was quite confident in myself and believed that I was pretty good in interviews. I didn’t prepare or do any research because I did not know what to expect, and I slept at 3AM the previous night, knowing I had the interview at 10AM the next day. When it came to the interview, I was slightly late because I could not find the location (newbie issues) and I was unable to answer most of the questions posed to me, though they were directly related to my student experience. I walked out of the interview knowing I did not do well.
At least, I was right on that front. I was not selected as an ambassador. I was later informed by a friend that only two people did not get selected after the interview, and I was 50% of it. As I was young, I was upset for quite some time, internally. Looking back, it was this defining failure that taught me to always:
- do some research about the role/company I applied with
- ask the recruiter if there is anything in particular that I should prepare
- rest early the night before the interview
- always arrive earlier than scheduled
