My first day working in a full-time corporate position began on May 4th, a few months before my August 3rd graduation and a week after my final submission. Wondering how I managed it?
After months of introspection and redesigning my CV in my second semester of the final year project (January), I finally clarified my goals. In February, I embarked on my job-hunting journey, aiming for positions in business and marketing within larger industries due to my foreign work pass limitations. After weeks of applications and nerve-wracking interviews, I finally received offer from my chosen company! Let me tell you, that feeling was indescribable! Subsequently, the process of obtaining my work pass took around 3-4 weeks, and I started my new job on May 4th.
You might wonder why I started applying in February. As an international student, I realized that my job prospects were somewhat limited due to work pass requirements, even if I successfully passed interviews. Applying early gave me ample time to secure a job before my student pass expired in August and also helped me avoid the competition with other recent graduates who typically start applying in May.
In hindsight, I can proudly say that I worked exceptionally hard to balance my final year project and job applications and interviews, and it all paid off in the end.
Keypoint:
- Apply at different platforms
- Rejection is normal!
- Try to apply during weekdays
- Set a target to apply how many jobs in a day
- Be polite, friendly and confident during interview
- Always do a company research before the interview
- Be prepared with all the questions they will ask (about yourself, strength, weakness, your goal in 5 years, expected salary, etc)
- After interview, you can write a thank you email to the interviewer
- Make sure to reply their email in 24 hours
- Lastly, don't give up!
To readers who are going through this journey, it's okay that you've been overthink about that. It's a new journey where we don't know which path is the best for us. Take some time to decide! ❤️
