recall training is an essential skill!

every dog should learn the skill of recall. It’s essential for dog safety training and can strengthen your relationship as well as provide your dog with a sense of independence.

start your training off in a quiet, safe space like a fenced in yard or inside. allow your dog to explore and then sporadically call them over to you. when they come, reward them generously with love and high value treats. have one recall word you use ONLY for this occasion. it should be different than “come” or “here”; something your dog doesn’t always hear so they don’t get too used to it. For example, my dogs recall word(s) is: PUNCH IT.

this skill takes a lot of time and commitment to learn. be patient and willing to dedicate a lot of time to learning. ideally you’d commit 15-20 mins daily until the skill is learned. avoid training if you’re already in a stressed or bad mood and don’t recall your dog for the purpose of punishing or yelling at them. keep the interactions upbeat, positive and fun so your dog WANTS to return to you despite any high reward distractions.
