Honestly there's no need to drive in Japan due to the superb convenience of public transportation. However, renting a car can be advantageous when visiting hidden gems that are only accessible by car!
To make the most of your car rental experience in Japan, here are my TOP 3 tips to keep in mind if youโre thinking of renting or driving a car in Japan
1. Checking your International Driving Permit validity
The most important thing is to check is whether your country is part of contracting states of the Geneva 1949 Convention (you can check here )
If yes, than you can get an IDP (International Driving Permit) from your home country that can be used to rent a car in Japan
2. Picking your car rental shop
The top picks that I got recommended are
- kayak.com
- rentalcars.com
- Toyota Rent a Car
Since the first two options arenโt available at the time I was planning my trip, I went with Toyota Rent a Car, It was pretty convenient as they have shuttle bus that takes you from the airport to the nearest shop.
โญ๏ธ Itโs best to book weeks in advance since the rental car quantity is often limited, try to change the time of your booking if itโs fully booked, sometimes even on the same date the result is varying per time
3. Getting an ETC card for your car
Electronic Toll Collection System or ETC is for fast and convenient auto entry in highway tolls. Usually the rental shop will offer you ETC if you want, at Toyota Rent A Car, it cost an extra 330 JPY (~2.4 USD) to get it. With this you will pay all your toll when you return your car.
โจย Our Personal Experience
On my last trip to Fukuoka, I was renting the smallest car available from Toyota Rent a Car for 5 days. I visited some beautiful location nearby Fukuoka like Yufuin, Beppu, and the scenic Mountain Trails in between!
