As a photography enthusiast, I’ve come to own a DSLR, film camera and polaroid camera over the years. Each type of camera has their own unique qualities and have different purposes, so let’s break them down!

1️⃣ DSLR

First off, price. This is obviously the most expensive of the lot given its wide range of capabilities, usually costing close to a hundred to a few thousands. I bought my Canon 70D at around $1.2k many years back, but you can get second-hand DSLRs at around $500 on caoursell these days.

The advantage is that it’s really versatile and you can control a lot of things manually that your iphone or film camera cannot, such as aperture, shutter speed and iso. These allow you to be more deliberate in composing your images and better adjust to lighting conditions. DSLRs also allow you to change lenses, which can make a huge difference in inages. Photos are also of much higher quality. Overall, it’s great for stepping up your photography game.

However, if you’re not super into the technicalities of photography and mostly like to take pics for the memories, an iphone might be good enough for you, especially with all the upgrades these days. Also, DSLRs are heavy. If you can afford it, mirrorless ones are better.

2️⃣ Film Camera

Film’s all the rage these days. It’s great for capturing memories on the go, whether it’s of your friends or of everyday scenes.

Some film cameras have more features than others, with some also allowing you to adjust aperture and shutter speed. However, iso is determined by the film loaded. So there’s that limitation.

I find that film takes a lot more practice to be able to achieve nice photos, because there’s really only one chance to get a good shot or you waste a few cents hahah.

It’s quite frustrating when your first few rolls always come out underexposed and overall sub-par, and also really expensive in the long run. The cost of the camera itself is much cheaper, usually $150 or less, but each new roll is around $10, and developing the film also costs around $10. That’s $20 each time, and ~$240 for a whole year if you use one roll a month.

3️⃣ Polaroid

I previously owned the small vertical one and now I own the wide one. I honestly much prefer the wide one because it captures so much more in one frame. Also, I’m not sure about the specs exactly but the quality of the wide ones seem to be a little better too. This is great for commemorating events.

Nevertheless, it is pricier than the original vertical one. I split the cost with my sister so that it’s more affordable for myself, which I feel was a good idea because neither of us use this on a daily basis too, so it’s more worth it.

🤓 OVERALL, I still love my DSLR best. Which camera do you think is best for you!
