Having worked full time for over 2 years, I’ve learned some hard to swallow pills about working in the corporate world — and STILL am learning!

⚠️ Disclaimer: I’m sharing these pointers based on my experiences as well as the experiences of people I know (with their permission). Each industry and company has a different culture so my experiences may not be the same as yours!

1️⃣ If you don’t ask, you won’t receive

- What falls under this umbrella would be almost anything and everything work related — promotions, pay raises, benefits, better work stations, better work environment, etc.

- Often times, your higher ups aren’t on the ground to know what is going on. So if you face issues or have any concerns, you should create an opportunity to voice them out!

- Also, just because you feel that you are due for things like a pay raise doesn’t mean your bosses feel the same way! Voicing out your concerns to your higher ups will make them aware that you are expecting a pay increment/bonus/promotion, etc.

- Yes, this might not work for everyone, BUT if you don’t try, you’ll never know! Peep my pay raise post here !! 👀

- Last year, I also had to take on responsibilities beyond my role/pay grade . After the whole incident, I scheduled a meeting with my bosses to let them know I deserved to be paid for my extra effort… and they delivered!! ✨🥳💯 While they didn’t take immediate action, they gave me what I asked for during my performance review this year. I was pleasantly surprised that they remembered!

2️⃣ Your words can be used against you, or affect the coworkers around you

- This was a real tough pill to swallow… as someone who is a people pleaser by nature, I care a lot about what others think of me 🥲 (don’t worry tho! I have been doing my inner work to care less and do things for my own sake instead of for the sake of others!)

- Jumping into the working world and being exposed to individuals who talk behind peoples’ backs (even at this stage of our lives where we should all be more mature) made me feel sick to the stomach.

- And what’s worse was knowing that word can get around to higher ups, eventually affecting one’s reputation and performance in the office. 😭

- Off tangent but I understand that rifts can happen with people at work! I believe in sorting it out amicably and face to face rather than ganging up on individuals and making a bad name for them.

- Unfortunately, there will always be people at work who love gossip and badmouthing. I had to learn to pick my conversations wisely. It was a tough realisation for me bc I am someone who loves open and honest conversations. I admit, I can be a little naive and wear my heart on my sleeve, but I’ve learned that sometimes, we shouldn’t reveal too much and we have to be smart about what we say (ugh I hate having to do mind gymnastics with my conversations…) 😔

3️⃣ Not everyone’s going to be nice

- Kind of similar to the point above! Not everyone will be keen to make friends with you. Some people are just here to work.

- I love being on good terms with everyone at the office bc it just makes work more pleasant! But some people really just dont see it that way and it was something I learned to just accept. (Again, it was hard for me bc I’m quite the people pleaser… 😬)

- Im not very proud to admit the amount of times I’ve stressed over my relationships with my coworkers… 😣

- I’ve slowly learnt to let go! My motto is what happens, will happen for a reason. There are people who become my friends for a reason, and similarly, people who I don’t become friends with for reasons as well!

4️⃣ Not everyone will have your best interest in mind

- This is quite a sad realisation tbh and I don’t wish such an experience on anyone!

- There are just some people in life who look at you as a tool or a useful stepping stone 🪨

- Someone I know, was doing so well in their job and wanted to further grow their career. They were keen on exploring a bigger role which would ultimately benefit the company. However, their supervisor did not want to promote them/push them to greater heights. The supervisor enjoyed that they had such a good worker on hand and didn’t want to give my friend up. The supervisor wanted to tie my friend down!! Literally the supervisor said “don’t fix what is not broken” 🤬🤬

- In the end, due to the unsupportive supervisor, my friend left the company to pursue better job opportunities elsewhere. It was such a sad loss bc they really did enjoy the work at the company.

What are some other hard truths you had to learn in your career? Please share in the comments bc I would really like to know! 🥺
