Between graduation and uni, I took on full (mainly) and part time work at Llao Llao as a service staff for close to a year. This was my first real job in my entire life (which wasn’t very long at that point tbh HAHA)! I learned quite a bit while I was there. Here’s some of them:
1️⃣ Independence
- I was blessed with a pretty sheltered life and loving/attentive parents. So taking a step out of that comfort zone was definitely quite a challenge
- I learned a lot of life skills from this new found independence but here are my 2 main takeaways:
- 💰 I learned the importance of money management!
— NGL and full on exposing myself but back in school, I used to spend all my allowance almost every month 🥴 I had ZERO sense for saving money. In fact I was owing people money … (just small amounts ok I not so jialat)
— The whole reason why I joined llao llao in the first place was to save for a grad trip, so starting this job and earning my first keep made me realise the importance of saving money and managing my expenses!
— I was even able to set one aside to pay for my younger sister’s tuition fees bc my family wasn’t doing well financially at that time 🥹 (so proud of younger me for stepping up!)
- 😷 I also learned the importance of taking care of my health
— I had to save money but also needed to feed myself LOL it was coffee shop and food court lunches pretty much 90% of the time!
— I needed to be responsible with what I ate and made sure to maintain a balanced diet — get all that greens, carbs and proteins!!
— But sometimes I would abuse staff privileges and make myself the craziest yogurt cup which obv made me really sick the next day! I then learnt the importance of self control 😇 😇 basically being responsible and keeping yourself accountable for your own health so that you can show up to work the next day.
2️⃣ I learned a lot about work ethic
- 🍦 Responsibility
— Just like my point above, I learned a lot about responsibility and diligence at work bc my actions as a full timer would literally dictate how the work day would turn out. E.g. I need to be early for work so that the shop opens on time, I need to keep track of stock, etc.
- 🤓 Leadership
— Working as a full time staff meant that I was in charge of the part timers, as well as all the bigger decisions when my manager wasn’t around.
— I was (and honestly still am) the kind of person that always had a lot of self doubt. So making decisions was always challenging.
— But I faked it till I made it and called the shots! I made decisions like how much stock to order (honestly a lot of guess work at first but i soon got the hang of it!), what to do in times of crisis (like when the yogurt machine would NOT stop churning out yogurt, or when handling difficult customers), etc.
— All this really helped build my confidence over time. It’s played a big part in who I am today (:
- 👥 People relations
— I learned a lot on how to communicate with people (both customers and my fellow work buddies) — how to navigate difficult conversations and practice patience.
— I’m still learning even till this day, but working at llao llao helped significantly
3️⃣ Besides learning, I also gained a great community of friends!
- I still keep up with the lives of some of them
- They made work so enjoyable and something to look forward to! We even made efforts to hang out outside of work (:
- I feel that as we grow older, some people tend to become more cynical/cold and draw a clear line between friends and coworkers. So work really becomes… just work. Now that I’m truly adulting, I look back and cherish the simpler times at llao llao! If you have coworkers turn friends, make sure to hold on to them tight 🥰
4️⃣ I also gained some muscle (and lost some weight)
- This final point is just a bonus haha! If you’ve worked in F&B before, you’ll know how physically demanding it can be!
- I used to carry HUGE 8kg tubs of yogurt mix up high to pour into the yogurt machine. I grew some serious arm muscles for a 19 y/o who had not done anything as labour intensive in her life LOL (if you see me now, those muscles in the last pic really look like nth HAHA but I really started with zero arm muscle last time)
- I also lost quite a bit of weight. I didn’t realise how much I lost until I switched to part time. When I started working part time after a break, I almost couldn’t fit into my uniform 🤪
- so…. If earning money AND losing weight or getting lean is one of your goals you can consider taking up F&B for a while 👀
I highly recommend taking on some sort of service job, part time or full time, at some point in your youth. For ✨ character development ✨. It might also help you with your career decisions in the future too!! I have no regrets making this decision bc it’s helped make me who I am today.
