🔎 On Bathroom Finishes: The different types of tiles most commonly used in bathrooms, and understanding why there are different labour costs for each type.

Hello #Lemon8SG community! ✨

I've decided to use this platform mainly to talk about home and reno stuff, since I've been doing Interior Styling & Interior Design for the past 3 years. There's always a lot to explore, discover and learn from in this field and I thought that it would be useful to share some of my tips and advices for future homeowners.

One of my favourite spaces to create (and transform) is definitely the bathroom, as there are many different ways we can tile one. It's important to also know and understand why some of the labour costs are more expensive than the other, so that you can decide what you want to go with & how you can fit your idea inside your budget!

I. Large Format Tiles

• 300x600 and 600x600 sizes are the most commonly used sizes as they are considered the average size for tiles, which also means that the labour cost for this would be of an average price point (cost will differ from contractor to contractor). Think of it as a bench-mark. Bigger tiles are usually more aesthetically pleasing if you're looking at a homogenous tile look as there won't be that many grout lines. However, one important thing to note that 600x600 tile sizes for flooring might not be most ideal as it might result in water trapping or pooling due to gradient issues. I usually would recommend >600x600 sizes for wall tiles, especially 1200x600 so that you can achieve a minimal-grout look. But installing 1200x600 tiles usually cost more for labour as it will require 2 people to tile a single tile (as it is a big and heavy piece).

II. Small-sized Tiles

• These are for subway, square or fluted tiles, or anything between the 200-300 size range! They are smaller pieces and usually come in more colour and texture variations, which is great if you're looking at a 'fun' bathroom in your house. These usually cost slightly more to install than the 300x600 & 600x600 ones, as they require more time & work.

III. Mosaic Tiles

• Mosaic tiles are the smallest sized tiles and they usually also come in rectangular, hexagonal or square shapes. This type of tiles are more costly to install than the other two types above, and they usually come with a netting. As it requries skilled workmanship and a lot of time, mosaic are usually the most challenging and trickiest for tilers to install. They also usually cost more (for the mosaic itself), but definitely appealing to have in a bahrooom as they add intricate details on your walls!

With so many different types of tiles available in the market now, it may be difficult to decide which tile sizes and style you would want to go with. If you have anything you'd like me to share more about, please feel free to leave a comment on this post! 😌
