how i dropped out of uni to pursue a career as a pastry chef

dropping out of university was not an easy decision. not only would i disappoint my closed minded parents, but i had to suffer the consequence of living life without a plan for the first time in my life. studying was never my forte as i was terrible at it nor did it interest me. however, having top students as my best friends never allowed me to think i could have a job outside of the corporate world.

only having graduated IB with a passing grade, i followed my “dream” of becoming a graphic designer majoring in visual arts and minoring in creative writing in a canadian university. it was the only thing that made sense since i was good enough to do art. but secretly knowing that i wasnt good enough to succeed. it was painful to admit, so i hid beneath the luxury of my parents wealth that i was fortunate enough to enjoy. but it was all a lie because this wasnt mine to enjoy. i was living with the guilt knowing my parents spent so much on me just so i can graduate earning minimum wage.

after a long debate, i decided to defer my university to pursue other interest, accepting that il be doing this with or without my parents support. unfortunately, it was the latter, i was depressed and suicidal. it was difficult to navigate life without my familys support, no future.

then i started baking and it became my haven. i found the process of putting ingredients together and seeing the immediate results to be very satisfactory. so i got a part time job doing pastry to test whether the industry was harsh enough to kill my passion. the harshness only made me work harder and diligently, and it nurtured and grew my passion further. now i live my life full of meaning and purpose, enrolled myself into a local pastry school to get a diploma in pastry and baking, and never looked back.

for those who are still soul searching, take a chance to pursue your dream. regret is not what you done before, but what you never did.
