Hey Lemon8 Fam! 🍋 Let's dive into a cool topic today: Present tense conjugation in Korean! 🇰🇷 We'll explore the differences between -(스)ㅂ니다 and -아/어요 forms. Get ready to level up your Korean skills! 💪
How to conjugate?
Step 1: Identify the Stem of the Verb/Adjective
The stem is the base form of the verb or adjective before adding any endings.
For example:
Verb: "먹다" (to eat) has a stem of "먹".
Adjective: "예쁘다" (pretty) has a stem of "예쁘".
------
Step 2: Add the Appropriate Ending
For Formal Conjugation -(스)ㅂ니다:
For Verbs: Attach "습니다" to the stem.
Example: "먹다" (to eat) + "습니다" = "먹습니다" (eats).
Example: "공부하다" (to study) + "습니다" = "공부합니다" (studies).
For Adjectives: Attach "습니다" to the stem.
Example: "예쁘다" (pretty) + "ㅂ니다" = "예쁩니다" (is pretty).
For Informal Polite Conjugation -아/어요:
For Verbs: Attach "-아요" or "-어요" to the stem depending on the verb ending.
If the verb stem ends in a vowel, attach "-아요".
If it ends in a consonant, attach "-어요".
Example: "먹다" (to eat) + "어요" = "먹어요" (eats).
Example: "공부하다" (to study) + "여요" = "공부해요" (studies).
For Adjectives: Attach "-아요" or "-어요" depending on the last vowel sound in the stem.
If the stem ends in a vowel sound like "아" or "오", attach "-아요".
If it ends in other vowel sounds like "이" or "으", attach "-어요".
Example: "예쁘다" (pretty) + "어요" = "예뻐요" (is pretty).
