Your armpit damn dark (translation)

It was the year 2017 when I started exploring how to take care of my body hair.

IPL was the in-thing at the moment. SHR technology wasn’t even in.

I started out on Fave to explore how to remove my armpit hair with trial sessions. I bought a package for 12 sessions at around $60+ from

On my first appointment, I filled up the form and was brought to the consultation room.

Lo and behold, that was where the 🌈 “magic” 🌈happened.

The consultant set me down and talked through the procedure with me, what I can expect and how long the process will take.

After that, she asked to check how the condition of my armpit was.

Well, I shaved before the appointment because there was a $10 surcharge if you appeared there with hairy pits. So this girl saved $10 by doing it herself at home. But I didn’t manage to save myself from the degradation that came.

I was wearing a tshirt, so I rolled up my sleeves and raised my hand up. The consultant supported my arm and took a look at the condition of my pits.

She said that there were 2 to 3 strands in one hair follicle, and that I will require more treatment to ensure that the hair is removed successfully and permanently. (Well kids, if you didn’t know.. it’s not permanent.. there needs to be maintenance session usually).

I told her it’s okay, I’m just trying out the package and will see how the results is.

Then came the secret weapon.. please note up to this point, it was her speaking in mandarin, and me trying to understand and reply her in my basic mandarin.

“你的armpit 很黑。”

I was taken aback.. 🫠 how do I reply such a statement? Did she mean my armpit was dirty? Smelly? Unsightly?

She then went on to say how ugly it was and that it wasn’t appealing. And that I should get the package and on top of that, have a brightening treatment to combat the discolouration (which now after my extensive research, I know is from lack of exfoliation, and the use of a blunt razor)

I felt so crappy when she went on and on about how ugly it was.

I just sat there and listened.. not knowing what to say.

Well, I stood my ground and told her it’s okay. Translation: 没关系

I think then she knows I’ve stood my ground. No means no.

The session went on and then I left as soon as I could and went home.

But oh gosh. The experience was horrible. Why do they target people’s insecurity like this? I mean, yes it’s your job to sell package and stuff. But well, not like that right?!

I’m glad I didn’t give in to the hard selling.

I diligently did my exfoliation, moisturising and taking care of my skin. That, ultimately helped to clear it up. But well, I’ve got hormones that doesn’t tip in my favour with discolouration. Even with acne scaring, my skin does take her own sweet time to lighten up and return back to normal. So it’s okay. I’ve accepted that my pits won’t be bright and smooth.

But that’s me. And who I am. I’m not going to let someone hardsell me.
