Although I went to Malaysia a few times back when I was younger, I barely have any recollection of how I actually went through customs & what I did, plus it was our first time going into Malaysia without our parents (!!!) So I’m here to share what I learnt from my experience as a msia newbie 👍🏻

We took bus 950 from Woodlands interchange to the JB customs (honestly a lot faster than I thought) & within an hour we were in JB! (We were super lucky there were no queues hehe)

✧• PRE-PAID SIM

After we passed the JB custom, the first thing we did was buy pre-paid sim cards! The one I bought is in the second picture^ it costs 10RM & came with 6RM credits (sufficient if you are only staying 1-5 days because you can get 24H unlimited data for just 1RM!! Although if you want faster data you have to pay more)

To get the sim card to work, you have to download an app (Celcom Life) & register with your passport, which requires WIFI, so we went to City Square mall to get free WIFI!! (The mall just outside customs) The actual City Square Mall’s WIFI didn’t work for us, so we just tried connecting to WIFIs that didn’t require a password HAHAHA (e.g. KFC, Starbucks)

✧• WHERE WE STAYED

We stayed at R&F Princess Cove, which was the condo directly above R&F mall. I would honestly recommend staying here if you are going to MSIA for the first time because its just ~10mins walk from the customs! (Connected via a bridge) So you don’t have to get a cab to go there (in case you have issues connecting your SIM as it can take awhile to process)

From R&F (since it’s connected to the customs), we could also walk to City Square so its super convenient! (via CIQ link bridge) R&F itself didn’t really have much stores though so just keep that in mind! But they do have 7/11 & another convenience store which made it super easy to get any necessities & also supper :p

✧• BRING MORE CASH

We mainly used cash to pay for everything including cab fares to prevent any conversion costs if we use a credit card/grabpay. You can also bring a youtrip card as backup but some food places & thrift stores only accepts cash! With the conversion rate, it’s also cheaper to get some stuff in MSIA as compared to SG (I got rare beauty from Sephora for $6-$10 cheaper & some uniqlo items for half price?? 🫣) So I would def recommend bringing more money so you can shop more :p

Hope this helps & feel free to drop a comment if you have any questions about my experience!! 🕊️
